“Power imbalances exist between herbalists and
those who come to them to be healed/ to co-heal. As healers who are very much human, we bring in our assumptions and biases. We can’t leave them at the door. They are very much present in our consultations and inform our healing work. We encounter all types of people who have had all types of experiences. If we are going to work with them on a physical, emotional, spiritual and energetic level, it’s important that we don’t allow our biases to harm this vulnerable person who has come to us for healing or prevention.”

What does an anti-oppressive framework look like for holistic healers?

1. It’s acknowledging systemic barriers to health and those communities that are disproportionately affected by them.
2. It’s continuously checking your privilege and biases and making sure it doesn’t inform your treatment of co-healers/clients/patients/customers.
3. It’s making an effort to understand histories of oppression and acknowledging and accepting cultural differences because denial of these histories and color-blindness are microaggressions and sure signs of privilege. Folks of color rarely have the luxury of waking up and having a day to navigate where they don’t have to know what color they are. Many visibly queer folks don’t have this privilege either.

Madison Kolla,R.Ac., completed studies in human
biology and her love of working with people led her to acupuncture. She graduated from Pacific Rim College in June 2012 at the top of her class.

Madison is passionate about community acupuncture, about making treatment accessible to the masses, and the power of healing in groups. She adores that acupuncture not only plants patients firmly in their bodies, but also allows them to take responsibility for their own health. She has a strong interest in the use of acupuncture in treating addictions and mental health, and has been exploring this through her volunteer work at AIDS Vancouver Island.

When not poking people with needles, Madison likes practicing ashtanga yoga and playing outside. Madison is looking forward to meeting our Heart & Hands Community!

The theme of this year’s Homeopathy Awareness month is Trauma & Disaster.

Traumatic events such as accidents, epidemics, natural disasters, shock and deep emotional upset are all things homeopathy can treat. Criteria is generally young families under 30 with low income/no benefits. We give priority to pregnant/ nursing mommas, babes and toddlers- as they often benefit greatly from naturopathic treatment, and students are looking to gain experience with pediatrics and pregnancy (having said that, we treat a lot of dads too :)

The expiry date is there to encourage you to get in frequently enough to get results.  Acupuncture works best on an accumulative basis and so we offer cheaper treatments in exchange for your commitment to coming regularly within a certain time frame. If the  commitment can’t be kept by the person who owns the card then the discount we offer expires in that six month time frame.

If you aren’t able to come in once a month for three months on a 3 treatment card, or once a month for six treatment card then please reconsider your commitment to your health at this time in relation to the rest of your life and choose whatever works best for you. We hope that the purchaser takes responsibility and priority in their own health and well-being.
